Tutorial: Guide to Jailbreak and Unlocking your Windows Surface RT

How to Jailbreak your Windows Surface RT:

First: Why jailbreak your Windows Surface RT?
Jailbreaking your Windows Surface RT allows you to install third party applications. One of the biggest complaints with Windows is that their app market is too small. So by jailbreaking your Surface, you will be able to install even more apps that aren't available in Microsoft market. At the moment however, since the jailbreak is relatively new, there are not many third party apps available (Quake 2 is available, tutorial here).

Jailbreaking the Surface is a little different than jailbreaking an iPhone; it is actually much safer and does not void the warranty. Basically all you're doing is running a program that tricks the device into thinking that third party apps are authorized Windows apps.

Step by step instructions to jailbreak your Windows Surface RT:

1. Download the Surface RT jailbreak file.
2. Unzip the downloaded file and shut off your Surface RT completely.(You will need to run the jailbreak program when you first start the Surface RT.)
3. Turn on your device, once you have reached the Start page, navigate to the Desktop, locate the unzipped folder, and run "runExploit.bat".
4.  Press "R" to confirm that you want to execute the jailbreak.
5. The jailbreak will prompt you to press the volume down key.
6. Success! Your Surface RT is now jailbroken and you will be able to install apps that are not signed by Windows.

Note: You will need to repeat these steps every time you reboot your Windows RT.
